For the past several weeks, a powerful movement has been growing across Broward County. At the forefront of this initiative are community leaders, including Mery Lopez-Palma, who, in collaboration with School Board member Brenda Fam, worked tirelessly to advocate for an invaluable cause: ensuring that every child studying Civics in Broward County schools receives their very own Pocket Constitution. This project was made possible by the efforts of the 917 Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting civic education and engagement.
I had the privilege of volunteering with the 917 Society, an organization that upholds the values of the U.S. Constitution and encourages active participation in our democratic process. What makes the 917 Society truly remarkable is its commitment to nonpartisanship—while fostering an understanding of our Constitution and civic responsibilities, it remains free from any political endorsements, affiliations, or biases. The mission of the 917 Society is simple yet profound: to inspire future generations to respect and cherish the foundational document of our country.
As volunteers, we were driven by this mission. From sorting and filling boxes of Pocket Constitutions to ensuring that every public, charter, and private school in Broward County received them, our team jumped into action with enthusiasm and dedication. The sense of purpose was visible as we worked together to make sure students across our community would have the opportunity to hold the U.S. Constitution in their hands.
This week, I had the honor of delivering copies of the Constitution to over 1,000 students across six schools in Margate. As I handed out these small but powerful booklets, I couldn’t help but reflect on the significance of the document. Our children may not fully realize it yet, but the U.S. Constitution is America’s most important legal framework, one that has withstood the test of time. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Americans to protect their liberties, freedoms, and inalienable rights.
Constitution Week, celebrated annually from September 17-23, is an important time to reflect on this history and remind ourselves of the Constitution’s continuing relevance. During this week, we commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787 and highlight its role in shaping our nation’s legal and political landscape. It’s a moment to appreciate not just its past, but how it still governs and guides us today.
Through efforts like this, myself, along with Coconut Creek Commissioner John Brodie, are helping to instill in our children a deeper understanding of their rights and responsibilities as citizens. We hope to ignite a passion for civic engagement and an appreciation for the freedoms they are afforded under the Constitution.
I am immensely proud to have been part of this movement and to have had the opportunity to deliver these Pocket Constitutions to the next generation of American leaders. The work we do today lays the groundwork for an informed, engaged, and responsible society tomorrow. As Constitution Week approaches, let’s take the time to reflect on the enduring importance of this document and the responsibilities we all share in preserving it for future generations.
